Happy New Year! Welcome to Dexter's Index.
My name is Dexter. Some of you may know me from my days as the editor of Net4TV Voice. These days of course I've been spending my time working with Dudette and Chai to create the best family-friendly games service on TV and your PC, Games4TV.
Dexter's Index is my way of telling you about cool, fun or interesting web sites that I've found. Some of my favorite sites might even end up in your favorites list. I will tell you about some interesting places to go on the Internet. Some will be fun, quirky web sites, while others may come in quite useful.
This edition of Dexter's Index is fairly short and serious, but I promise future editions will be much more fun.
Like so many of you, we at Games4TV have been deeply saddened about the devastation in parts of Asia and Africa caused by the tsunami. We've looked up a bunch of sites that have information about the disaster and sites that are accepting relief donations.
My first link is from Wikipedia, a free, on-line encyclopedia. You can learn about just about anything at Wikipedia. But it's much different from the World Book Encyclopedia you knew as a child. Wikipedia is written and edited by everyone, experts and laymen alike. You'd think this might make it a bit of a mess, but it's astonishingly interesting and useful.
I should let you know that you should probably supervise your children when using Wikipedia. Wikipedia is written by the public and covers a broad range of topics. Some topics may not be family-friendly and are intended for adult and teenaged audiences.
That being said, Wikipedia is an excellent source of information. When I heard about the Tsunami, the first thing I did was look up Wikipedia: Tsunamis.

I was going to list off a bunch of sites where you could donate to the tsunami relief efforts, but instead, I'll link you to the truly excellent Wikipedia, which has put up a great round up of organizations who help disaster victims around the world. Donations for victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake from Wikipedia.
One of my other "go to" web sites when I want to know what the heck is going on is Google News. Brought to you by the geniuses who brought us the world's best search engine, Google News combs through thousands of news sources to bring you the latest information on what is going on in the world. Here is the latest tsunami round-up from Google News.
Until time, I wish you well. Happy New Year!
-Dex
